Program Description

This IDS study abroad course will take place primarily in Thailand. The course focuses on both a service outreach in the Bangkok community and on a cultural immersion designed to introduce students to the unique richness of Thai culture through lectures, excursions, and site visits.

Students will spend two weeks at the home base in Bangkok. While in Bangkok, they will be expected to adhere to the rules of the house, to provide volunteer services to the community from 8AM to noon five days a week, and to participate in scheduled cultural activities.

This course is a Service Learning Course with a focus on global citizenship. This course is designed to introduce students to the lessons of volunteering through practical experience. This five-week course will focus on several topics which will include the following: the culture of Buddhism, communication through the arts, the meaning of citizenship, and the art of marketing of a volunteer experience.

Volunteering is a central part of this program. Students will be assigned a job based on need and preference. Jobs focus on teaching, child care, elderly care, and disability care.
